Yoga Hits the Streets

When Mark Lilly, a software engineer and yoga practitioner in Portland, Oregon decided to organize yoga classes for the homeless population of that city, he learned it wasn't as simple as finding a teacher and and buying some mats.

"Many nonconventional places have had yoga teachers, but I found that in nearly every case, the teacher eventually had to stop teaching due to burnout or life events," Lilly says. "The homeless have had enough of good things dropping out of their lives. We wanted to provide ongoing teaching, simply as a way of honoring them with our commitment."

Yoga Helps Homeless Teens Get Centered

Teaching at Juvi -- Donald E. Long in Portland

The following was written in Winter, 2007 by Free Thomas, our primary Juvenile Justice teacher.

He writes: "I am now into my 3rd month teaching yoga to male teenagers in the RAD unit at Donald E. Long facility. I certainly knew from the beginning that this would be a challenge, yet I had no idea in what ways. Luckily, before I ever stepped foot in the unit, the staff had been talking up yoga and getting the guys excited because “Yoga” was coming!

Outside In

Outside In offers a safe place to connect with other youth, eat healthy meals, and access services that will help you stay safe, and help you build up for yourself the life you want.

White Shield Center

We started teaching yoga at White Shield in 2003.

The girls at White Shield range in age from 12-17. We have been teaching the longest in the Wildflowers program, where girls come to live for up to 3 months while waiting to be moved elsewhere by the State foster care system.

We have just taught our first nutrition/cooking class at the Cottagew

Yoga for Youth

Yoga for Youth has created a dynamic environment for addressing many of the social and behavioral problems confronting these youths. We believe Arts and Yoga for Youth can have a dynamic impact on the lives of its participants and offer an effective and affordable alternative to detention and police-centered crime prevention.
