Greetings. Very excited that we have our training coming up this week. It's been a busy month, so this will be a brief update. I hope all of you are well and thriving and i send all my very best thoughts and wishes your way.
Namaste, mark
The teacher training will be this Wednesday evening (June 25th), 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Outside In. In addition to the curriculum i sent out before (click here) i want to set up a teaching schedule for July and August. We'll discuss this together Wednesday.
Thank you all for your enthusiasm around this. I think the training is going to be a great and focusing step forward in this work and i look forward to seeing everyone who can make it.
Three more folks did the orientation in June. There will be another one in July. Interested folks should call Outside In directly at 503.535.3815.
Matt and i wandered over to a place called P:EAR. They are located downtown and provide education, art and support services to youth living on the streets. They are a great group, and every month, they have art gallery showings of works done by the youth. They are excited about our yoga teachings, and if anyone is thinking of buying art by local artists, check out P:EAR!
I'm still assembling these, but i have found that there are at least three groups in L.A. teaching yoga to youth, at least one in New York. There is also a lady in Vancouver, BC who is putting together a program for street youth and a woman here in Portland teaching yoga in schools (many in low-income areas). I will post more next time about links to these groups, and if anyone knows any resources such as these i'd love to hear about them.
I think there was a note about StreetYoga in Yoga Northwest magazine, and an ad recruiting more teachers. Thanks to Yoga Northwest for their support.
I know it is too soon to think of expanding, but in minor ways, we might think of some non-traditional avenues to have some fun this summer with yoga. Maybe we can hold a class or two outside --there is a courtyard at Outside In, or maybe at Pioneer Square, or over at the park blocks. Also, if we get some momentum, i'd love to hold a class at another site, maybe New Avenues for Youth (younger kids) or SMYRC (sexual minority youth). We shall see. :-)
